Cultural Council

Information About the Local Council

The Massachusetts Cultural Council is funded by appropriations from the state Legislature and from the National Endowment for the Arts. Allocations come from the state budget that is developed each year by the governor, the House of Representatives and the Senate.

The mission of the Council and its local cultural council partners is "to promote excellence, access, education and diversity in the arts, humanities and interpretive sciences, in order to improve the quality of life for all Massachusetts residents and to contribute to the economic vitality of our communities."

The Cultural Council Program distributes funds to local and regional cultural councils, which then re-grants funds to arts, humanities, and interpretive science projects in their own communities. The process for grants is by application, which is available on the Massachusetts Cultural Council website. The deadline for applying is usually in mid-October.
