Celebrate the Season: Read Holiday Stories at Meekins
Join friends and neighbors for the annual reading of holiday classics that
celebrate this time of wonder at the Meekins Library, Williamsburg on Sunday,
December 10, 2017, from 4 to 6 in the afternoon.
The first reading will be Isaac Bashevis Singer’s Hanukkah story, The
Parakeeet Named Dreidel. This humorous heartwarming story tells how an
escaped Yiddish-speaking tropical bird brings two young people and their
families together.
The second reading will be author and illustrator Allen Say’s Tree of
Cranes. This book tells the story of how a young mother mixes the traditions of
her American childhood and her home country, Japan, creating a special
celebration for her young Japanese son’s first Christmas.
The final reading will be The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle, the classic
holiday mystery story by Arthur Conan Doyle. In this tale first published in The
Strand in January1892, Holmes and Watson spend Christmas Eve trying to
determine how the fabulous blue gem found its way down the gullet of a goose.
Everyone is welcome. Come read or listen and enjoy holiday treats and
warm drinks. Please bring a donation of food for the Williamsburg COA Pantry,
something warm for the Survival Center or something special for our animal
friends at the Dakin Shelter.
