How To Access Your Teacher Folder

A number of folks have “teacher” folders on the file server. This is an area that only you (and not other students or staff) can access. The files there are also backed up every night. Other teachers are keeping their files locally (on their classroom computer) or in “class folders”. Whatever you choose is fine. However, be aware the files in “class folders” - while backed up - can be read and even deleted by anyone in the school including students. Files stored locally are not backed up.

If you would like a protected and private “teacher” folder, please let me know. The one disadvantage of using a teacher folder is that you need to login to server with a password. If you forgot your password, I can reset it.

HOW TO ACCESS YOUR TEACHER FOLDER

If you are on an OS 9 computer like the iMacs, do the following.

Drag any existing file server folders to the trash. These are called “Class Folders” and “Essential Skills”. Note that not everyone will have “Essential Skills” mounted on the desktop. [Usually, what happens is that these folders are mounted when the computer starts up. You are logged in automatically as Guest, which is the non-private, non-protected account used by all “class folder” users. So you first need to logout by unmounting these folders.] Directions for getting “class folders” back on the desktop can be found in a separate document.

Click on the Apple Menu -> Network Browser

Click on the triangle next to Apple Talk.

Click on the triangle next to MacServer

You will be asked to Login to the Server. Click on Registered Guest. Type in your username and password, and then click on Connect. Note that both as case sensitive.

Your “Teacher” folder will appear in a list of folders. Double click on it. Voila. Your folder will appear on your desktop like a normal hard drive. You can drag files in and out of the folder. When you first save a file, make sure you save it to your “teacher” folder

Open a finder window by clicking on the Finder in the Dock (the happy Mac face).

Click on Network. If you don’t see this, click on View -> Show Toolbar.

In a short while, MacServer will appear either right there or inside Local. Double click on MacServer.
